Description

Image shows a postcard with a drawing of a German soldier, a backpack, and some German text.
The text reads "Any infantry man probably knows
Here this agonizing instrument
His bogey man, his pest
Is this thing that is called “monkey.”
Without a pause in tiring agony
He carries him over mountains and valleys.
Carries him like a bagpipe,
Soaked in sweat, piggyback,
The monkey never has sympathy,
And always plays the overblown/ bloated one.

But does it go into the quarter at night,
Then one values this monkey animal.
One opens up its round belly.
Because lots of things to use.
For [?] and for pastime
Hides his bloated body.
And once the earned rest calls upon
One closes the flap again.
Adjusts the monkey carefully,
And sleeps on it, in fact, not bad.

[referring to the backpack shown on the card]"
